Volunteering at the Capital Area Food Bank in South Austin TX

A few weeks ago, my brokerage, Regent Property Group, decided to do some volunteer work at the Austin TX Capital Area Food Bank in South Austin. I had never done something like this, so it was very new to me. I had no idea what to expect. Other volunteers weren't sure either because it can be something different each shift.

This day's shift was basic sorting of groceries. I was in the section that helped decide if food was to move on, or be thrown away. They have some pretty strict criteria to follow. No can is allowed more than 1 dent, even if small dents. No dent can touch the rim, either top or bottom. No dent can have a shape end, meaning the dent needs to be rounded.

We also had to check for expiration dates. Amazingly, most canned food excepted can go back as far as 3 years, yes, I said 3 years! There are some exceptions to the rules like baby food has to be 2 months before the expiration date. Anything with tomatoes as a top 3 ingredient can go back 18 months, and cereal can go back 1 year.

The theory? Adults and kids have built of immunities to any potential stuff in expired foods and they can still eat the stuff, but babies don't have those immunities set up, so their food can't be near the expiration date.

It's amazing how much food has to be thrown away that they can't do anything with because of a dent or not having an expiration date printed.

Anyway, it was a fun morning. We were there for 3 hours. We sorted a record breaking 3210 pounds of food that provided 2676 meals to local Austin families.
