I've been in Austin all of negative 2 days, as I don't actually move there until Saturday, but I'm the Acting Vice Chair of the Austin Board of REALTORS® Grievance Committee.
I've been on the Professional Standards and Grievance Committee for the State of Texas for about 4 years now. With the move to Austin, I found out that the Austin Board of REALTORS® (ABoR) doesn't play together with the State of Texas' Committee, so I had to join theirs.
In March, I had to attend a 7 hour training class, which I already took for the 3 time in January in Dallas, but again, since Austin doesn't play with the State, I had to take the class over again. At the class, The ABoR's attorney announced that he was looking for a Vice Chair.
I sat through much of the meeting waiting to see if anyone was going to approach him for the position. See, in Austin, you must be on the Grievance Committee for three years before you can be on the Professional Standards Committee. They look at it as two separate committees, though it's one on the State level.
Mid-way through the class, no one had approached him, so I introduced myself. I told him I was moving down from Dallas and I told him my experience. Even though they wanted the Vice Chair to have at least 1 year's experience on the Austin Grievance Committee, I told them I might be a better choice.
Anyway, I got the call yesterday that said I'm the new Acting Vice Chair, and as soon as I attend two meetings, I'll be instated as an actual Vice Chair! I'm so excited!
My husband doesn't like me being on the committee or going to the hearing panels because they take up lots of time and it's FREE, but I like it for a couple of reasons. The first is that it's interesting to see how other people actually conduct their business. It's also interesting to see how other people perceive another's actions.
Austin, here I come, and with a vengence!

Congratulations, Donna! It does sound like an interesting position...Happy moving! :)
Debi, Thanks! I hope it's interesting. The same 'ol same 'ol gets boring.
I can imagine that it would take up alot of time. Too many people/business owners don't know how to treat the public/consumers.
Congrats!
Are you allowed to share?
Wow! It will certainly be a good way to see the weirder side (and characters) of Austin Real Estate! Call me when you get settled!
Donna, I am sure you will do fine with the people who come before you because you have a lot of common sense and great people skills.
Angelia, Share in what way? The stories I hear? Those are confidential...
Russell, I sure will! You wanna help us unpack this weekend?
Gary, Thanks for the pat on the back!
Good for you for jumping right in. Nothing like serving on committee's to get to know your co-workers in Austin. Love the chair.
Hi Donna... Congratulations! I had no doubt you would establish yourself in the Austin Real Estate Community... I just figured you would wait until you were actually living there! LOL. Way to go!
Donna,
Congratulations, I love it when members volunteer and try to make our local and state organizations better for all.
Thanks for your efforts.
Donna, I would love to help out but you know...my back has been giving me some problems and...
Missy, That was one of my thoughts as well.
Steve, No need to live there to work. In fact, maybe I'll move back into my house here and commute once a week.
Richard, Thank you!
Russell, I've got pizza and beer! Our movers are 59 and 60 years old... I'm sure you could carry a box or 10.
