Austin TX Real Estate - Hill Country Austin Lakeway Homes for Sale: Happy Juneteenth, Texas!

Happy Juneteenth, Texas!

Today is June 19th which is Juneteenth Day in Texas.

What's that?  I get asked this every year by people when I mention Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is one of those holidays you learn a lot about when you take 7th grade Texas History in Junior High.

June 19, 1865 is when the slaves in Texas heard the news that they were free.  Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation back in 1963, but it took over 2 1/2 years for the news to get to Texas, and that day is forever called Juneteenth.

Juneteenth officially because a holiday in 1980.  There are parties going on all over the place, it's not too late to catch one!

Donna - We have always used Juneteenth as the day we turn on the A/C; however since the TX weather got r e a l l y hot early we did not honor our tradition. 2 1/2 years for news to get to TX, my have things changed with all the instant news we have today.

Thanks for the nice blog.

Hi Donna... now there is a holiday that would have been unnecessary if they had been Tweeting back in 1843!  :)

Donna:  Maybe soon we will be celebrating another holiday... the day when one of our sellers gets free from their Short Sale.  Now that would be something to celebrate.  (Hi Alyssa... )

Hooray for you Donna educating folks on Juneteenth but you have your dates wrong.  Look back and correct them OK?  Good going bringing this to everyone's attention.
