I got a heart-wrenching call this evening. We had just walked in the door when my mom called. She says, "I've got something to tell you that I don't want to tell you, but Andy made me call..." Andy is my stepfather, so I've got all these things running through my head.
My mom tells me that they had to put Shayna down yesterday afternoon. I had no idea what to say. I reminded her that we spoke this morning and that she said nothing about it. She didn't want to ruin my weekend.
Shayna was the best dog ever! If anyone were to ever want to clone a dog, she would have been the one to clone. She had massive personality. She knew when I was on the phone. She knew when I was coming over. She knew everything!! And she always liked to Ham it up for the camera. She loved her picture being taken!
She used to lick off my Popsicles because as you know, dogs have the cleanest mouths ever! She used to paw at my eyes to wake me up when I spent the night.
Shayna was a very awesome dog. There aren't enough words in the world to describe her. I've never had a dog quite like her at all... Shayna was 13 years old. She was diagnosed with Diabetes the week before I moved. She hadn't eaten in three days and had lost over 10 pounds...
And then there's poor Kari. Here are a couple of old pictures of the two of them together. Kari doesn't understand where Shayna is. My Mom says she's been very clingy and quiet. I'm sure she'll be ok.
Goodbye, Shayna... I'll miss you!!

Coping with the death of a loved pet as your Shayna is most difficult .Grieving does take place. When we lose a pet we truly lose a family member. It is so unfortunate that our pets live such short lives compared to our lives.Sometimes this happens several times during our lifetime. Over the years I have lost 2 shepherds, my Dukes Treasure the time you had with Shayna, Pets are truly our “best friends”.
Sorry for your loss. She was a cute pup. I hope Kari will cope well.
Donna, it's never easy. I'm also thinking about Kari -- she won't know what happened and that's hard, too. This is a lovely tribute to Shayna!
That's so sad. I had to have my dog put to sleep a long time ago and it was so hard. I agree remember the great times you had. ~Rita
Donna, It is true, pets are family. They give so much to us unconditionally. At times like this it is important to remember all the good times.
Oh my goodness, Donna. How adorable. I have had to put down my beloved dogs before and it's always heartwrenching. And poor Kari!
Donna - Sorry for your lose of your pet friend. Shanya sounded like she was totally amazing.
Its always sad to lose a pet. For your moms dog to lose 10 pounds is crazy because she only looks to be about 15 points in the pictures. Anyway, I am sorry that you have lost a family pet. I know when my dog of 12 years went, I was a mess for a little while. We grow so attached to these fantastic animals.
Donna,
I am truly sorry for your loss.
Kathleen, Very much a shame they don't live longer. We put down another shih tzu when I was about 14.
Angelia, Thanks.
Shoshana, Yes, Kari is a little clueless.
Rita, Thanks for the kind words.
Gary, Very unconditionally and always with a wagging tail!
Heather, Thanks.
Robert, Totally and completely amazing!
John, She was 21 pounds as she was a larger shih tzu breed. Kari was about 12, as she's a smaller breed, but has gained a lot of weight eating all the food Shayna stopped eating. Shayna got down to about 10 pounds... all bones!
Richard, THank you.
Donna, so very sorry to hear of the loss of Shayna. Pets are part of our family and we are hit very hard when they pass.
Gary W, Thank you, and yes, very hard!
These little furry creatures truly become members of the family. It's so sad to see them go.
Shirley, She was like my little sister... she did so many things with me. She was definitely part of the family and thought she was human!
Donna - The loss of a little friend is very hard to bear. My thoughts are with you and yours
Hopefully Shayna is running around wiith new furry friends and watching over Kari and your family.
