Austin TX Real Estate - Hill Country Austin Lakeway Homes for Sale: Steiner Ranch - Austin TX - Neighborhood Garage Sale

Steiner Ranch - Austin TX - Neighborhood Garage Sale

I'm not one for Garage Sales, but we were in the Steiner Ranch area of Austin TX last weekend, looking at brick colors to put on our house, and it happened to be during the big Steiner Ranch community garage sale where about every 10 homes had their garage door open and they didn't have to do their own marketing or advertising to get people to come.

We were looking at this particular house and discussing the colors, and I inches forward a little to see the sides. In doing so, I noticed a house that had a little tricycle thing with a handle.  That looked cute... how much is that, I wondered...

I hate garage sales because of the potential confrontation.  Someone is asking $20 for something that is clearly worth only a couple of bucks, and I don't want to insult them by walking away empty handed, but I also don't want to haggle the price.

However, I slowly and cautiously walked up the driveway... it was $5.  Look at all the fun Alyssa can now have for only $5!!

She can touch the peddles, but doesn't understand how to actually peddle, so her feet keep falling off, but that's what the handle is for, so I can push her along as she learns.

What a great $5 spent, plus we found a great color brick to go on our  house to replace the bad brick, but that's another story...

Hi Donna ~ I used to be totally hooked on garage sales before real estate took away my weekends. I had a route planned, hit the road before the sun was up, and by 9:30am drove home with that morning's loot.  No question about it when I hit a sale where the prices are too high - or the stuff bores me - it's not much fun.  And garage sales should be fun - I always have a blast when I hold one.

The point is to get rid of the stuff - put a low price on it (and putting a price tag on it is key) and have fun meeting the neighbors.  I don't run into *too* many crazy priced sales - those people seem to be selling on craigslist around here - you gotta shake your head at some of the asking prices.  Glad to hear of your good score.  Love the picture of Alyssa in her shades!

Haggling is part of the fun of garage sales.  Don't let that aspect inhibit you.

How cute!  I don't stop at garage sales much either.  Up here they are mostly called yard sales.  I used to go to a lot with my mom as a kid, guess I got sick of them.  Lately with 4 kids and seeing how fast they go through stuff, I've been thinking of stopping at them to pickup those expensive toys that they only use a few times anyways.  What a good deal you got!

I love garage sales and have always had great luck finding treasures. Two weeks ago we found one of those motorized  tractors that cost about $300 still being sold and we got it for $20 because it was missing a battery. We got a brand new battery for $19.95. Our son LOVES that thing! ~Rita

Donna - As you can see, you can get some good stuff from garage sales. Just because someone is selling it, doesnt mean its old. I know we have given away things that are practically new because our kids pretty easy on their things. So, good will has really liked us over the past few years. Can't go wrong with a solid $5 investment.

Looks like a great deal for $5.  I had a listing in east Dallas, and ever Sunday that I held an open house this one family was having a garage sales.  I think it was a real business for them.

Richard: Dallas has a restriction of a maximum of 2 sales per year.  The family behind your open house was running the risk of being fined by the Dallas Code Enforcers.

Liz, I've always viewed garage sales as neighbors trading junk.

Lorrie, But you're at their house, and it seems wrong.

Kathleen, Yard sales are for houses with rear entry garages, like in Dallas, but Austin is mostly front entry so we're back to "garage" sale.

Rita, THat's an awesome find!

John, But the "good" stuff is usually sold on Craigslist.

Richard, Lots of Dallas houses did that.  Clothes racks and everything!

Lorrie, Are you sure?  There are tons of garage sales all the time in the lower greenville area, same houses, same times, same stuff every week. I know a lot of burbs went to that, but I didn't hear city of Dallas did.

Donna:  Yes, a maximum of 2 sales a year, otherwise they are running a business that brings traffic and parking problems.  If the neighbors complain, the garage sale holders will probably get a ticket.
