Help save Lake Travis Kids R Kids!!
I have sympathy and empathy for the people who have been laid off over the past few months and years, but you never really know how bad it is until it affects you personally.
Granted, I haven't been laid off, however, many people in my immediate community have been which means many young kids have been taken out of school as families can't afford daycare, and how does that effect me??
I got a notice this morning that my daughter's daycare is closing, effective December 23. Yes, right in the middle of the Holiday season, we're all scrambling to find new placement because enrollment has dropped considerably.
Currently, there are approximately 150 kids at this school, and there are only two other daycares in the area, not including the Montessori schools. How are 150 kids going to find placement?
I'm lucky that I don't have to make a knee-jerk reaction like others to get Alyssa into another school right now, as it's a little easier working from home than someone in corporate world who can't take their kids to work, so I'm letting those people grab the immediate openings. Aren't I nice??!!
I've also made several calls this morning, and found a very nice gentleman who would like to buy the school and turn it into one of his schools. I have put him in touch with the attorney, and maybe I can help broker the sale as a short sale. We'll see.
For now, I've been in constant contact with about 15 families today to keep everyone posted.
Someone, please help us save our great school, Lake Travis Kids R Kids!!

That's never good. One of my very difficult question to the schools I interview is their financial stability. It's tough when there is no stability. Sorry this is something you have to experience.
If you ever have to look into a different option, you might look into the Montessori programs as well. I find that it may best suit Meng's personality as well as his "older" or matured personality compared to other classmates. The Montessori program is based on the child's development, not age like the public school system is.
So sorry to hear about your Kids R Kids...but you are right! We as realtors have some flexibility built into our jobs! Yes, you are nice to let the others grab the immediate openings! :)
Donna
Good luck with keeping the school open.
Good luck and success.

Loreena, THe montessori don't work for me/us. One is only until 3:30 and the other is full time, but I have to bring a lunch each day and I much prefer the hot lunch option. And when we joined, there were twice as many kids as now, so the report I would get at that time would be different than the report today. You never know why people take their kids out, but the majority has been loss of job, and that can't be controlled.
Sonja, I'm going to regret it come February and I can't get her into any daycare in the area, as there are only TWO!
Lou, Thanks!
I sincerely hope that your school can be saved. Maybe your blog will help!
Donna - I hope you find someone who is able to save Lake Travis Kids R Kids. Closing a school doesn't only affect the parents it also affects the children. I'm fortunate that my kids adapt well, but I know a ton of children who are not good with change.
Hi Donna... I hate the idea of the kids having to adapt to this kind of change at such a young age. I hope your efforts to save Alyssa's school are successful!
We are seeing similar drops in enrollments in many of the area day cares/ schools. No closings yet that I know of. ~Rita
Wow, Donna. I can't imagine. We have 3 very young grandkids in a day care program, and know that it's not easy to find one they grow and are happy with. Good luck in keeping the school open!
This is the second toy store to be closing. So surprising around Christmas.
Keep us posted on this. I hope you would be able to connect the buyers and sellers together. Go girl!
Barb, One of the stations saw the tweet and told me to email their newsdesk, so I did...
Michelle, My daughter will adapt fairly well, but it's just wrong to give 1 week's notice!
Steve, I hope so!
Rita, Not good...
Ruth, Thanks!
John, Toy Store??
Loreena, I spoke with the buyer again this morning and he asked if I do Commercial Real Estate after I asked him if he would build a new daycare if he can't buy this one. He's serious since I told him there's not competition out here for him!
You're right. A good daycare is always on every family's radar. They always have waiting lists too. If only daycare provider knows that not all are created equal.
