Austin TX Real Estate - Hill Country Austin Lakeway Homes for Sale: Don't Friend Me and then Spam Me!

Don't Friend Me and then Spam Me!

Just because I friended you on Facebook doesn't mean you can spam me! Am I the only one who finds it annoying that other agents and real estate industry people are friending you only to send you all their multiple of messages a day about their next webinar or their next product or their next website they can build you, etc...?

social network facebookWhy do I friend other real estate related people in the first place? To network and make sure they know I'm there in case they have someone they know in Austin or moving to the Austin area. I want to make sure I'm their first thought for Austin...

However, in the next week or so, I'm going to start defriending you people who constantly post about stuff that is meaningless to me. Don't "invite" me to your events when you're 3000 miles away.  Don't "invite" me to your infomercials trying to sell me stuff!

I don't mind if you post business stuff every so often, as I definitely let people know when I'm showing properties or closed on a house or something like that, but I don't send "invites" to people across the country when I'm teaching one of my classes. If you must, then "like" my business page and do it there, but not on my personal page.

My clicker is gearing up for the defriend button and so be it if I lose some networking "friends".

Donna,  absolutely agree with your post.  I experience the same thing with all the spam.  Bad enough we have spam awaiting us in our email inboxes, but it seems to hit a special nerve when it happens on facebook and linkedin.

Great post.  When I first set up Face Book I didn't know you couldn't have two accounts but another Realtor told me to have a separate one for real estate and a private one.  I have seen what goes on the real estate one and no longer even open it for your reasons stated.  It's just another social media lesson I needed to learn.  Best of luck to you.

Donna, this reminds me that I read how friend is now listed as a noun and a verb in the latest edition of the dictionary.  And who ever heard of defriend before?  At any rate, I think it is a good way to fight spam.

Vickie, Huge nerve! But at least I got rid of the Farmville and Mafia Wars stuff.

Gary, I have a business one and a personal one, and don't mind real estate people on the personal one if they're "friendly", but they need to go to the business one if they just want to talk business. That's boring.

Pat, Very interesting! Kinda like the F word is every form of grammar from a verb to an adverb...

I didn't wait a week, I went ahead and deleted someone already!

I don't mind friending someone on FB but do get annoyed when they send us spam. Certainly people obviously don't know how to properly use social networking correctly.

I try to make a lot of friends on facebook so that I can network with other agents but I try to treat it as what I want to see. (You know, the golden rule). If I would be annoyed or offended then I don't do it.

Recently I've become very particular about who I friend.  I too have been unfriending some people that continue to invite me to their out of town events over and over again.  When I send out invites, I take the time to select those people that I think would truly be interested.  I don't send out blanket invites to EVERY BODY I've ever friended!

Hi Donna... I couldn't agree more!  I have noticed the same thing and have recently made a few strategic defriendings as a result!

Dan & Amy, Granted, some social networking, like Twitter and LinkedIn is good for the "spam", but not Facebook!

Weber, Good!

Lou, Thanks!

Loreena, On the wall? That's wrong!

Donna, I've never actually even sent invites out, but maybe I should to boost my class attendance...

Steve, I'm just glad they're not sent a notice when you do it!

I have tried, to some extent, to keep Facebook as a more personal expereience. The couple of Realtor friends that  I have accepted have been very respectful...excpet for one.

I turn down more "friends" than I accept and I don't "friend" friend's friends * I don't know them and we are NOT at a cocktail party!

Yes, that sort of thing recently happened to me. From one innocuous contact to a blitz. Josh somebody and his partner. Shows what a big impression they made on me. Can't remember their names.

Some people will never get it.  These are the ones who will leave Facebook and other social media sites swearing that they don't work!

Donna, I guess I am not that popular in Facebook as I rarely receive spam there. One good thing about being lazy to work on my social media stuff... :O)
