Alyssa just had her first week of Pre-K and she loved it. It takes me back... Kindergarten is almost a blur for me. I went to Narrows View Elementary School in Tacoma WA, but it's no longer called that. We had a great view of the Narrows Bridge, hence the original name. I don't remember my first day, per se, but I asked my mom if she took me and she claims she did. I remember having to walk to school everyday, over 2 miles, while our friends in the neighborhood got to take the bus. My brother and I went to a different school, not in our area, as it was the only school that had a bus pickup for the after school program we went to.
I remember we went around the room telling everyone our names and birthdays. No one seemed to know their birthdays. When it was my turn, I remember telling the teacher I didn't know my birthday either, even though I did, because I didn't want to be the only one who knew it. I didn't want anyone to feel bad for not knowing their own birthday.
I recall my teacher's name being Mrs. Orange, but I just found my class picture, and it's confirmed that I was in AM Kindergarten with Mrs. Mitchell. Can you find me in this picture?? No hints... My best friend was Jill, up in the right corner in the purple and pink. She was tall! I can't tell you anyone else's names. We moved to Texas after second grade so I never kept in touch with these kids.
I also remember that our desks made a big C around the room so we could all look at each other. That's very different from the rows or the groups of four desks that many teachers do. I also remember we cut out a lot of pumpkins and hearts. We were showed how to fold a piece of paper in half and cut out half a shape, and then when you unfold it, it became the full shape. That's the main thing I recall learning all year.
Towards the end of the year, I remember we were taught a few words so we could recognize them when we went into first grade. Words like Dog and Cat and Cow.
I remember school was only a couple of hours. It started at 8:05 and we got out at around 10:30 as I was taken to my after school daycare in time for lunch.
I can't say, "Everything I know, I learned in Kindergarten" because I didn't really learn much of anything. I probably did learn more than cutting out shapes, but I don't have a memory of it at all.
