Austin TX Real Estate - Hill Country Austin Lakeway Homes for Sale: City of Bee Cave City Council Meeting - Home Rule Charter Vote May 11

City of Bee Cave City Council Meeting - Home Rule Charter Vote May 11

Last night, I went to my very first City Council meeting, the City of Bee Cave.  We are having an issue in our city as we're in an in between stage of growth. Yesterday's meeting was important because the City Council was voting on whether or not to hold a special election in May for the residents to vote on a Home Rule Charter. The vote was unanimous!!

City of Bee Cave - City Council Meeting - Home Rule Charter - No Covert

A Home Rule Charter allows the city to have a little more control over the growth of the city and the ETJ areas immediately outside the city limits.  This is important so the "wrong" businesses don't try to set up shop where they're not wanted.

For example, did you read my previous post about the Covert Dealership who bought land right outside my neighborhood of Falconhead West? If we had Home Rule, this would have been stopped before it started. Since we didn't and don't, they can't be stopped except by the residents in the area making a lot of noise.

However, once they build, if they move forward, and if Home Rule is voted on in the May election, we can file nuisance charges because the Home Rule charter allows for control within the ETJ on nuisance within 5000 feet of the city limits. What does this mean? This means that Covert can be stopped from using their loud speakers. They can be stopped from having their lights on 24 hours a day to protect their inventory. They can be stopped from constant sounds of the service bay... etc...

If they create a nuisance for the residents, the city can help stop those issues or reduce those issues to help ensure our peaceful way of life in the Hill Country isn't disturbed.

Last night's meeting was standing room only, and it wasn't just residents of Falconhead West. There were residents of many communities in the Bee Cave area, and no one is wanting the Covert Dealership to set up shop here. We will continue to do what it takes to stop them. We have bumper stickers that have been distributed around the area. If you live in Austin and have a Covert license plate cover, you might get a flyer (or two or three) on your windshield asking you to remove it and to support us. Non-family friendly, big business isn't wanted in Bee Cave.

Having excessive lights and noise right next to a residential area in Bee Cave Donna I would definitely classify as a nuisance. It's great everyone is organizing to resist this.

Donna- That could be a big nuisance.  Great job on the community sticking together and voting.  Question- I know that area is really growing, what's the estimated population of Bee Cave?

Gary, Thanks!

Stephanie, I'm not sure the exact number they came up with, but you have to have at least 5000 residents in order to become Home Rule, and we surpass that based on several data and calculation studies.

Donna,   I had to come back and visit your blog to see the estimated amount of residents in Bee Cave.  Thanks for responding.  The Austin and surrounding areas are booming....
