Austin TX Real Estate - Hill Country Austin Lakeway Homes for Sale: Stainless Steel Appliances or Something New? Ice White by Whirlpool

Stainless Steel Appliances or Something New? Ice White by Whirlpool

I have a buyer coming in from California next week and we were talking about the differences in what you get in what price point out here in Austin. He's looking in a lower end price point and was curious why that wouldn't come with stainless steel appliances.  Stainless is still for the middle and higher end homes during new construction. If someone has updated their home, you might see stainless, but you'll usually see black.

I was reading somewhere that Whirlpool is coming out with a new "white" appliance package. It's called "Ice White". It's a new look to white as it's trimmed in a stainless look.

Bringing white back? Does it make sense?  I'm not sure...

Many high-end homes are now doing white cabinets throughout their kitchens. It makes sense to blend your appliances into your cabinets.  Here's a picture from Whirlpool that I saw online.

What are your thoughts to bring back white? It was all the rage at one point... can it be again?

Thank you for the tip on what is new out there.

I think it could catch on if there are more manufacturers making similar applainces.  Stainless has caught on, and everyone is making it, which makes it easy if you have to replace one of your applainces.

I have always liked White.  But then, I liked the Pink from the 1950's, the Yellow from the 1960's, and the Avocado from the 1970's!

Too much white makes it look like a hospital.

Posted by Gary Woltal, Assoc. Broker Realtor SFR Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty) almost 6 years ago

It's very COLD!

My preference is the warmth of wood.  That said, if a home has white and a buyer likes it, fine with me.  For new construction, the all white selection may reduce the resale opportunities, but not by much.

Posted by Lenn Harley, Real Estate Broker - Virginia & Maryland (Lenn Harley,, MD & VA Homes and Real Estate) almost 6 years ago

It looks very modern and like Lenn said, kind of cold.  I don't dislike it at all, just not sure I would want it.  I prefer the stainless appliances.

White just looks ordinary to me - no warmth.  But that's just me.

I think the "all-white" look is good in a small kitchen or at a beach property. However, it's hard to imagine rich warm wood tones and stainless steel appliances going away, especially with the popular open concept kitchens where there is wood furniture in the nearby living areas.

I am more concerned about what is in the refrigerator...OK, to me, colors don't matter although I do like the stainless look.

I think the white kitchen is great in some homes, depending on size and natural light, although it is not my favorite. I do love the Ice White appliances, though, in those homes where a white kitchen works.

I love it and doesn't come across as cold! I am finding buyers are reacting positively to white again.

Donna, white mixed with stainless is a new look. It may catch on. Stainless steel has been around for a while and nothing lasts forever.

6 years ago when I redid my kitchen I bought white glass Jenn-Aire appliances.  People would ask me why.  My response was, Once you have stainless you'll never have it again.  Horrible to keep clean.  Love love love the white.

Chris and I are on the same page with stainless...yuck....prefer wood panels...a blended look....

Good morning, Donna.... I love's a clean, contemporary look...yes, very cold but with nice definition....that defines contemporary..... I was never sold on stainless....too difficult to keep clean with fingerprints.... I like the white trimmed in stainless....

I love a white kitchen!

I actually have white appliances. When I redid my kitchen, I painted the cabinets white and got matching white appliances. It's not the biggest kitchen so being visually uniform was important. You can always add interest by using contrasting colors on the counter tops or floors.

Obviously they've done their research, and believe there's a market out there. Of course, like everything else, it's just a personal preference.

Posted by Richard Iarossi, Crofton MD Real Estate, Annapolis MD Real Estate (Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage) almost 6 years ago

We remodeled recently and went white appliances...They look great and accent the kitchen very well. Ice white may be a hit for both worlds

I showed a home yesterday and the buyer said she preferred white - think many are looking for a change. Regards Dave

Donna, I think some buyer's just have stainless steel on the brain. Personally I think it's a nice clean look.
Posted by Wayne and Jean Marie Zuhl, The Last Names You'll Ever Need in Real Estate (Samsel & Associates) almost 6 years ago

I'm not finding too many white appliances yet.  I like them but when clients find them in older homes the feedback is they show dirt too much.  Maybe they've got a solution for that.  The look is really nice in some of the contemporary styles we're seeing such as craftman style with contemporary flare.

Posted by Bryan Robertson almost 6 years ago
Everything comes back in style. In 10 years stainless will probably seem dated and something else will be in. :)
Posted by Sarah Becker, Northern CA REO & HUD Home Sales (SJB Real Estate & Management) almost 6 years ago

Donna, I think the white with stainless trim sounds nice. We are all used to stainless appliances. These white ones would look good in a lot of kitchens with white cabinets

Posted by Helen and Larry Prier- Re-Max Gateway - Residential Real Estate, Anacortes & surrounding Skagit & Island Counties (RE-MAX Gateway- Residential Real Estate Sales) almost 6 years ago

I like that fact that we have lots of options. Personally, I think the color ( and style) of appliances depends on the theme of the home's decor or character. For an older home, I would try to do a vintage look, etc.

Stainless is still the preferred standard, but hey, everything can change. :)

Seems toooooo white. Would be afraid to cook in this kitchen as anything will show.

Posted by Edward & Celia Maddox, EXPERIENCE & INTEGRITY - WE TAKE THE HIGH ROAD (The Celtic Connection Realty) almost 6 years ago

I think it has an elegant and clean look.  I like it very much.  However, let's please not bring back "Harvest Gold" and "Avocado Green" appliances, or the chocolate brown shag carpeting either!

Things are really going well in the market "out here in Austin..."  (I'm in the Bay Area and things are going well here too!)

Posted by Kate McQueen, Tailored service for your real estate needs! (CB&A Realtors) almost 6 years ago

All depends on the kitchen cabinets and flooring and countertops.  I have white in my kitchen and I was just going to write something about "at least it's not Avocado Green" . . . and looked up to #29's comment.  Exactly!

After living with Stainless Steel for 7 years I was glad to move into a house with black appliances.  I think white can have it's place as well and buyers need to get over stainless as they only option.

I actually like this look and think it will be quite popular. The question is--how much more will it cost than traditional white?

Posted by Tammie White, Broker, Franklin TN Homes for Sale (Franklin Homes Realty LLC) almost 6 years ago

Donna, I am sure many consumers may appreciate this new "white in Stainless" look. Anything new will be popular when it first comes out.

That looks really nice in the Picture..Ice White.  I Have a feeling that's the Stainless Steele's Latest Competition! I would like that in my Kitchen.

Casting my vote for Ice White - it looks good in the picture but you really have to want all that white.

Posted by Teral McDowell (Referral Patners LLC) almost 6 years ago

Donna, the Stainless craze couldn't last forever. I expected it to go out long before now!

Posted by Connie Harvey, Realtor - Nashville TN Real Estate (Pilkerton Realtors) almost 6 years ago

Granite counters and stainless steel are still "king" in our area. Yes, I see people "playing" with other materials, but the demand for granite and stainless doesn't as yet seem to be abating.

We live in a log cabin so white might not work well, but we HATE stainless. I really like the black matte look and think it is the best. I really like the new white and think it will be a good contender.

I'm through with anything stainless steel in the kitchen....shows to many stain.

I would love to see more white kitchens.  Too many kitchens are dark.

Posted by Roy Kelley (Realty Group Referrals) almost 6 years ago

Since nobody reads newspapers anymore, it probably doesn't make any difference.

There was a time back in the day that  a person would sit at the kitchen table, reading the newspaper and drinking coffee, discussing the headlines with her spouse, that guy in the rumpled bathrobe and uncombed hair, and when they got up to remove a glass or plate or anything from the cabinet, just touching the cabinets with their newsprint-stained fingers, why, they would smear smudgy black stuff all over the white surfaces.

I think the clean look is always in, which is why this kitchen looks so nice. Also, I have noticed the trend is to be different than the Joneses.

I never liked stainless . . . ti me, it seems way too much like a science lab. And friends who had it said it was difficult to keep clean. Not for me! The house we bought had all new appliances (yippee) and they were/are white. Works fine for me! We are planning to redesign the kitchen but will keep the appliances and have fun with new cabinets and countertops. And color accents.

Donna - I haven't been seen new white appliances as a trend, and I'm not sure I'm ready for it, but if it comes, then it does.

Thank you for all the differeing opinions of this. It is weird to walk into a kitchen with all white, but with the stainless accents, it might be a sleek look.

It depends on the kitchen, of course, but in the one pictured, it looks wonderful.  I can think of several other kitchens, most of them high end, in which "Ice White" would be the perfect choice.  An all white kitchen might be a challenge to keep looking clean, but, then, there's the fingerprint problem with stainless, and all white would sure make for a light, bright kitchen that makes it easy to see what you're doing in there!

I don't care much for stainless steel appliances. I do really like the black Appliances. Replaces in your picture really look nice. I think you'll be ahead. At least for little while.
