Alyssa is 9 1/2 years old and has always had long hair. Her hair is naturally curly, like mine, but she gets knots in her hair like I never did. I told her that we would wait until after her bug Nationals Gymnastics meet before we cut it.
This was her on Friday.
When I realized how much we would be cutting, I started looking to see if it could be donated. I knew there were places that accepted 10-12" with no problems, but that was going to be cutting it close, literally. I found a place that accepts 6-8" called Butterflies BBI. They give wigs to children who suffer from Cancer, Alopecia, and other conditions with hair loss. We liked that her hair would be going to help kids since she is a kid.
She washed her hair and came downstairs all excited to go. I separated the hair into two groups to ensure length as best as I could. 9 1/2 inches were cut off!
She's never had short hair in her life, except when she was a baby, so it feels different. She had her first gymnastics workout yesterday with the short hair and she said it felt weird. It's only hair, and it'll grow back!

What a great kid you've raised there. I did the same thing only I think it was over 10" twice. Well worth the effort for a great cause.
I have 2 friends that do something very similar at least once a year.
Kudos to you Alyssa for thinking of others in their time of need. Your hair can always grow back but the sacrifice you made will have a huge impact on someone that will last a lifetime
Donna- please thank Alyssa! We have a friend who had a daughter who because of her illness could not grow hair. I will never forget the smile on her face when she was given a beautiful blonde wig. We all went to dinner and the waiter complimented her on her hair. I wish I'd had a camera to capture that smile!
What a wonderful, giving child - and she looks cute with her shorter hair, too!
Kathy, That's great your friend's daughter received a wig. I imagine she felt like a princess.
