Austin TX Real Estate - Hill Country Austin Lakeway Homes for Sale: Changing Out Wallpaper Borders

Changing Out Wallpaper Borders

Man, I absolutely HATE wallpaper, and I hate wallpaper borders even more.  And that made it very ironic that I found myself having to pick out new wallpaper border for our kitchen.  My husband LOVES the current wallpaper because it looks like a faux finish.  We have such an open floorplan that he likes how the kitchen and nook have a different look than the family room.

I, on the other hand, want to tear that stuff down so quickly!  He did finally grant me "permission" to tear it down as long as I repainted a faux finish.  Huh?  There isn't enough actual wall space to spend the time to learn the technique and actually apply it.

But, I do know that the original border HAD to go.  Here is a picture of the psychedelic monkeys that the previous owners picked. You notice how often the pattern repeats? It's like on an every 10 inch repeat cycle.  Do you realize how many psychedelic monkeys that is looking at you everyday?  The border had to go.

Most stores around here don't sell wallpaper much anymore, much less borders, so I had to go online.  I was not happy about this.  I told my husband that if he was addimant about the wallpaper, that he should look for the borders.  He, for some reason, couldn't find any, but I think that was an excuse... so, here I am, a wallpaper hater, looking at wallpaper borders.  Since I was adamant about not making the final choice, I found 5 options for him to choose from.  Do you think he made a choice?  No, he sent back 2 telling me to choose.  So frustrating...

Anyway, here is what I chose.  I chose this one because we were very limited in what we could chose because it had to be at least 10 1/4 inches wide to cover up the previous border.  Also, the wallpaper is much more yellow than I would like, so it's heard to match much of anything else, especially to the rest of our decor, so I had to chose something with constrasting colors.  So, needless to say, I don't care for the selection, but it's better than the monkeys.

Here are some pictures with some decor back in place.  What do you think?

The grapes are a little too purple, but the monkeys were way too dark, so this will have to do.  Just changing the border has definitely brightened up the kitchen quite a lot.  I didn't think to take actual before pictures, but I should have.  If you have dated wallpaper or borders, making a change could change the entire look of the area.

Even though you're not thrilled with having a border, but from the pictures it looks great. Good choice. One question though - why would anyone pick monkey's for their kitchen? What were they thinking?

Those monkeys were frightening!!!  I've been stipping wallpaper borders put up by the previous owner, in my own house for the past three weeks.  I still have one bathroom and a bedroom to go!! After this brutal exercise, I can tell you I will never have any wallpaper in my house, EVER!

Jim, Thanks!  And we couldn't ever figure out the fruits in that picture except for the watermelon, but I guess they decided that since there was fruit in the picture, it would look good in a kitchen.  The previous owners were not the brightest people and caused us a lot of problems, but I'm slowly getting over it as it's been 3 years now... it just took 3 years to finally do something about the monkeys.

Paul, I feel your pain!  I tore down wallpaper this time last year in order to create a nice bathroom for my daughter.  It took over 6 hours to get that stuff off the walls!  AND, I was almost 6 months pregnant at the time!

Deb, what's interesting is that I didn't even notice the monkeys until my husband pointed them out about a year ago.  I only ever saw the watermelon which I always thought was weird that it wasn't regular watermelon colors, but more of a harvest fall color.  But as soon as I knew the monkeys were there, I couldn't stand looking at them!

In my house, I get to make the decorating decisions! I feel your pain for having to live with something you dislike but kudos to you for being so willing to compromise. ;)

I am a fellow wall paper disliker... I can understand your distain. we had bugs and flowers on our kitchen walls for less than 6 months after we moved in (I put moths instead of months first, was that a freudian slip?..) it just had to go!

As you point out so well, wallpaper is very "personal" and why it generally does not appeal to buyers. Many buyers are also scared off by the work involved to change it! Glad that did not deter you from making a change that will improve your enjoyment of the space. But, if it comes time to sell, the border should go.

u switched one pattern for another...it does offer color and it probably makes the ceilings look taller. fruits? looks like olive garden or HEB! oh well, you had to compromise..

Kelly, Good to hear you get to make all the decisions.  I have one of those husbands who always says "I don't care", but for someone who doesn't care, he sure has a lot of opinions and ways that he wants to do things...

Karen, Bugs and Flowers?  ICK!

Linda, Sorry, but we are getting it ready to sell, and the border's not coming down since the rest of the wallpaper is not "allowed" to come down.

Greg, We tried for the wine bottles pattern, but we couldn't find one that didn't clash with the main wallpaper, and since the fruits had varying colors, it looks much better.  I'm not good at compromising, but we did it.
