Austin TX Real Estate - Hill Country Austin Lakeway Homes for Sale: Icy Roads Keep the Car Washes in Business

Icy Roads Keep the Car Washes in Business

The Dallas area has had icy roads the past couple of days. Since the average Dallas area person doesn't know how to drive in icy conditions, days like these typically shut down the area.

I mean, hardly any ice and several larger school districts closed their doors yesterday.  What's that about?  Most were smarter and just did a delayed 10am start to allow for the slower traffic.

I had to drive in it yesterday and didn't think it was bad at all.  However, the sand trucks were out in full force.  On days like these, those sand trucks have to go out and put that nasty stuff on the ground that makes your car look like an utter mess.

It looks like I haven't washed my car in years.  Layer upon layer of caked on nastiness from the roads.  The Car Washes must love days like this as everyone in the area will need to wash their cars.

Here's what a turn lane looked like yesterday morning (And yes, I was stopped at a red light), along with some icy pansies in my front yard.

My son has been at the University of Arkansas for the past 2 years. His wife is always amused when they shut down the schools so quickly for the smallest snow flurries.

Ah yes - lived in the Big D for a year and remember laughing at the traffic after some black ice.  It was a mess.

It's the same way here. 1/8 of an inch of frozen ground and Houston goes into instant panic.

Denise, Good to hear it's not just Texas!

Joan, Major Black ice on New Year's 2001.  It was HORRIBLE!

Greg, 1/8 of an inch?  We didn't even have that much!

Same here in Seattle!  Just the mention of the WINTER STORM of 2008!  and one of the school districts closed today!  We never got the snow (in this part of the city), but the kids got a day off anyway.  But when we do get snow, I agree,  it does certainly make for my car needing to be washed.  Glad to know mother nature is helping the economy - at least car washes will stay in business :)

I drove through the "accumulation" yesterday on the way to Arlington.  Having lived in Montana for a couple years, I always get a chuckle about the Texans's take on the ice and snow.

Greg, #1 party school in the state, huh?

Geri, I'm originally from Tacoma and I remember having to go to school on icy days.  You would nudge the car in front of you, get out to look at "damage", and both tell the other to have a nice day.  My brother and I also had to walk in the icy weather most of the time, and carry our boots home.  memories...

Lorrie, Snow is awesome!  Today's nastiness is gross with the fog and mist.

Donna - It doesn't look like Dallas got much ice at all!   It's funny that your schools are closing.  However, when we close our schools, people in Minnesota probably laugh at us.  We probably look pretty wimpy...  :)

Hi Donna... this was really a non-event in my opinion.  I am among the first to say if the roads are bad, just stay home, but this was a big nothing (although the plant I forgot to take in from my balcony did not enjoy it).

Debi, Nope, not too much ice.  My district was open,  but many others closed or delayed.  Today is supposed to be 72 degrees, and then back to the 30's this weekend.  Hot cold hot cold...

Steve, My new plants didn't care for it either. I'm hoping today's warmer weather wake them back up.

Hi Donna, I'm glad for them, because they close when the weather is bad and lose alot on those days and their workers are paid hourly and with tips so lost wages must hurt at this time of year especially.

I was thrilled when I pulled into the Mi-T-Fine carwash in Plano last Friday and only 5 cars were ahead of me....just after I arrived no less than 10 cars then more kept coming. I said a little prayer of thanksgiving that I got out of there in less than 30 mins. with a car looking mi-t-fine indeed.

Karen, I picked up CHinese food on Friday night.  There were SOOO many cars, at least 4 lanes 4 cars deep and they were spitting out right and left at the other end.  My car still looks horrible, but I'll get it washed in the next couple of days.  There is just so much nastiness still on the roads, it seems counter-productive to wash it when it'll get dirty again...

Mi - T - Fine (Custer btween Park and 15th) offers a 3 day unconditional wash guarantee Donna, I always plan on going back by the 3rd day to just do the exterior wash again. No questions asked, you just drive yourself thru!
