Austin TX Real Estate - Hill Country Austin Lakeway Homes for Sale: Texas Marriage License Legislature

Texas Marriage License Legislature

There is some new legislature that has been introduced for this session.  They are wanting to increase the amount for a Texas Marriage License to $60 from $30.  However, if you can show you had pre-marital counseling, you only have to pay the $30 fee.

What?  Is this supposed to deter people from getting married on a whim?  It's only $60!!!  If you want to prevent people from getting married so you can help alter the divorce rate, charge a couple hundred dollars or something that will actually put a dent in people's pockets and make them think about what they're doing.

Also, there are some religions that already require pre-marital counseling before marriage and that doesn't seem to help.  How does the state of Texas think this is a good idea and that it will work.  They must be really bored!!

The state is probably just trying to raise money.  I guess they figure they need to get it anywhere they can.  And if that $30 difference encourages someone to get pre-martial counseling then great.

The local news ran a story recently stating that the national per capita divorce rate has declined steadily since its peak in 1981 and is at its lowest level since 1970. The rate peaked at 5.3 divorces per 1,000 people in 1981.  But since then, it's dropped by one-third, to 3.6.  The study cited that more people are living together without marrying so that could be affecting the numbers.

I don't think anything government will do will ever help the divorce situation.  Government seems to make the problems worse and not better.
